Ever wondered what the heck we’re talking about on Rdio’s site, blog, FAQs and forums? Use this glossary to get the scoop on some of our favorite and oft-used Rdio terms.
Collection: A list of your favorite artists, albums, and songs all in one place. Add things to your Collection using the Action Menu.
Action Menu: See that little ‘+’ or checkmark that appears over albums and songs when you mouse over them? We call it the Action Menu. Use it to Add (to Collection or Queue), Sync, Share or purchase (Download) music.
Web Player: Whenever you’re listening to your Rdio tunes on the web, you have the Web Player to thank. Use it to play, pause, skip, shuffle and repeat music. Click the little list icon to see your list of upcoming songs.
List of Upcoming Songs (the list icon): Click the list icon on your Web Player to display your upcoming songs, as well as view and manage your queued, upcoming, and recently played tracks.
Queue: Albums, songs, playlists, and stations you'd like to play later will display here. We use this list for keeping track of new (and old) music discoveries, new tunes, recommendations, and other items on our musical laundry list. Quickly add new music from the 'Play Later' option in the action menu, or shortcut an album to the top of your Queue with a quick CTRL (or CMD on Mac) click. Once whatever you’re currently listening to finishes, whatever is next in your Queue will pick up right in its place.
Sharing: To share, hover over the action menu and click ‘Share this..Album, Artist or Song’. From there, you can link to, embed, or share music from Rdio directly through Facebook or Twitter, with a shortened rd.io link, or via email.
Playlist: Get creative! Use playlists to organize & share your favorite tracks, collect holiday jingles, create odes to your favorite sports team, tell someone how you feel...You can access your playlists from the dashboard header or in one of our mobile apps. Extra points if you share your creations with friends and followers!
Collaborative Playlist: Stop. Collaborate & Listen. Allow other people to join the fun by making your playlists collaborative. Share ideas, play musical games, and take advantage of other Rdio-ers’ vast musical knowledge.
Following: See what other people are listening to, reviewing, or adding to their Collections and playlists by Following them. Use External connections to find friends from Facebook and Twitter who are already on Rdio. The people you Follow will also influence your Heavy Rotation and appear in your network’s Recent Activity.
Dashboard: Your Dashboard is your Rdio homepage—use it to view your own musical Heavy Rotation, as well as your Network’s and that of the entire Rdio community. The Dashboard also has links to your Queue, listening history, playlists, and reviews.
Clip-only, Not Available, Preview Only: These indicators are present when we don’t (yet!) have streaming rights for a specific album in your region. Some of these albums are available for Download.
Stations: The Ultimate shuffle—Stations are an easy way to hear a shuffled mix of music from any Collection, Heavy Rotation or artist page you find on Rdio. Just click the Station button, sit back, and listen.
Artist Stations: Artist Rdio Stations will play a shuffled mix of the artist’s available tracks. Click play in the artist page’s header to start listening, or use the general Station option if you'd like the option to turn Recommendations On or Off.
Sync: With an Unlimited subscription, you can Sync songs to your mobile device using one of our mobile apps. Synced music is stored directly on your device, and does not need a wifi or data connection to play. (Whether you’re Online or Offline, synced songs will play locally). You can Sync as much music as will fit on your mobile device, and it will remain on the device as long as you have an active Unlimited subscription.
Downloads: For some albums and songs, you’ll see the option to Download. These MP3 Downloads are entirely separate from your Rdio subscription, and the Rdio desktop apps manage downloads for you. You own these MP3 downloads, and thus you can transfer them to different computers, and they’ll remain playable whether or not you have an active Rdio subscription. You’ll see the individual download price listed next to the Download option.
Now get out there and start listening! As always, if you’ve got questions, let us hear about them in our forums or by email.
