I had to jump ship to Spotify because of this one feature. There were several bands that I love that were not available on Rdio and I couldn't take it anymore.
Some of those same bands are also NOT available in Spotify's library either, however, Spotify allows me to dump MP3's into a folder on my laptop, which then syncs to my account and (yes) allows me to add those songs to my playlists which are full of songs that are available in Spotify's library as well. For obvious reasons, I can't share any of those songs with friends, but I really don't care because I can at least listen to those songs on my phone and laptop at the least.
Rdio looks better, is easier to discover new music with, is easier to use and is just much cooler overall (in my opinion), but this one feature is very important. Are there any plans to include this with Rdio's services anytime soon? If Rdio allowed for this functionality I think Rdio would truly be a killer app and I would come back in a heartbeat.
I completely agree with you. I was considering coming over to Rdio from a Spotify Premium account until I found this feature was not included. People have been buying music for years and not providing a way for them to listen to them in this app is a complete drop of the ball on Rdio's part.
Yeah, it's the ONE thing that Spotify HAS done right. It's a killer feature, and if Rdio wants to really compete with the mainstream and majority of music lovers they need to add this functionality and upgrade their ENTIRE library to 320kbs. If MOG and Spotify can do it, Rdio can too. Rdio should receive all of their content as FLAC files, then encodes it themselves, so 320kbs should be a no brainer.
Hi all,
Thank you for checking in with us on this. I'm sorry to say that the ability to play local files isn’t currently on our roadmap for a few specific reasons: local files aren’t social in the way that our user experience calls for, and managing them adds overhead (they need to have good metadata, you need to keep them backed up, etc). If this changes, we'll send you an update.
Best,
Mike
I like the idea of this too, but I understand what Mike is saying. Also, Spotify is really crappy at managing their metadata. They have wrong years of release, wrong artwork, wrong track numbers, etc throughout their collection.
I can respect that. Unfortunately, this is a very big feature for me. Otherwise, I love Rdio and if it wasn't for this one thing I'd still be a subscriber without a doubt.
