Android app won't start

Caleb Pierce Apr 18, 2012 07:07AM PDT

I have the latest version of the Rdio app and version 2.1 of Android, which is supported, but the Rdio app hasn't been able to successfully start for several months now. Because of this, I had to downgrade to web-only playback, but I would love to have the app working again and be able to go mobile again. Any suggestions?

Hi Caleb,

What device and version of the app are you using?

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S, and I have version 2.1.5 of the Rdio app. It opens to the splash screen for just a moment, then immediately exits.

Hi Caleb,

Would you wipe the app from your device completely, then intstall the 2.1.6 update? If things aren't any better there, do let me know—we'll have you send device logs for our team to take a look at.

I've just uninstalled the app and installed version 2.1.6, and I'm still having the same problem.

Hi Caleb,

To send a log, click Settings > Submit Log. If you'll let me know once you've sent the log, I'll make sure to alert our Android team, so it gets looked at ASAP.

Hi Madelyn,
I do have the app installed, but I'm never able to get it to load more than the blue screen with the logo on it (I've referred to it above as the splash screen). I can't get to anything inside the app such as menus, settings, etc. Because of that, I can't supply a log.

When attempting to run the app, it will do one of two things. Either it will open to the blue screen with the logo and hang there indefinitely, or it will open that screen for just a second before crashing completely and exiting.

Hi Caleb,

We're trying to figure out what might be causing this—thanks for your patience. Can you let me know which OS you're currently running on the device?

Best,
Madelyn

Thanks for continuing to check into this. I'm using version 2.1 of Android.

Hi Caleb,

Ah—in that case, it's your device's OS causing the issue. It turns out that Samsung shipped a broken kernel with Android 2.1, which is not able to support JIT compilation. So, since you possess a Galaxy-class device with Android 2.1, you will get unexpected results (like the new Rdio app not starting), and this is caused by a kernel bug that breaks cache coherency, rendering any engine doing JIT compilation useless.

The fix Android suggests is to check with your manufacturer/carrier for an Android 2.2 update.

Madelyn

I have exactly the same issue on my LG540 - is this a general 2.1 problem? There is no 2.2 for my phone...

Hi Caleb,

This kernel issue shouldn't affect non-Samsung devices. What exactly are you seeing?

Madelyn
